Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries that vulnerable to natural disasters in the world. Empirical data shows that 11 million people are threatened by earthquakes and 1 million people threatened by floods. This condition requires Indonesia to ready facing natural disasters that can be occured any time. One of the major problems in the event of a natural disaster is sanitation. Sanitation is one of the basic needs of all people. Unfortunately, a good sanitation can not be provided in the evacuation area. Refugees must face the lack availability of clean water in the evacuation site. Moreover, refugees also feel that the sanitation facility comes too late. To resolve those problems, this research is focused on the design of portable toilet to fulfill some refugees needs in the evacuation area. This paper will explore more about the toilet design requirements by combining TRIZ and QFD methods. These methods are really helpful to match the refugee requirement with the technical specification.
